Why You’ll Love this Recipe

  • So easy to make – no talent necessary!
  • Naturally sweetened with maple syrup.
  • They make a great treat or even an on-the-go breakfast.
  • You can put your own spin on them by adding shaved or diced apples, nuts or chocolate chips.
Applesauce cookie ingredients - oats, applesauce, maple syrup, salt and cinnamon.

Ingredients and Substitutions

  • Unsweetened Applesauce – You can use sweetened if you prefer or even other flavored Applesauce that include things like peaches for a twist.
  • Quick Oats – I like to use quick oats in this recipe because they soften up more quickly in the oven but if you like a chewier texture you could also use rolled oats.
  • Maple Syrup – adds sweetness. Honey can also be used.
  • Cinnamon – Adds a warm flavor. Pumpkin spice or adding nutmeg or ginger also works well.
  • Salt – Enhances the flavor overall.

How to Make Applesauce Cookies

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Add all of the ingredients to a bowl. Mix well to combine.
  3. Scoop out 1.5 tbsp of the cookie batter and roll into a ball with your hands. Flatten them out into round patties about 3/8″ thick and place them on the baking sheet. These cookies will not change shape or spread when baking but leave space in between.
  4. Bake for 14-15 minutes or until they are firm to touch and do not break apart when trying to remove them from the baking sheet. Let the cookies cool completely before serving.

What Texture Are Applesauce Cookies?

These cookies are not like a typical cookie that has been made with flour and sugar. They are a denser cookie with a soft and chewy texture.

How Do You Get Perfectly Round cookies?

Round cookies don’t taste any different than cookies that are a little rough around the edges but they sure do look nice in pictures. To get a perfectly round edge to these cookies all you need is a large glass.

Once you have formed the oatmeal applesauce cookies into disks and placed them on the cookie sheet cover the cookie with a glass bigger than the cookie itself. Then gently drag the glass in circles like you are drawing a circle with the cup. During this process the raw cookie will bump up against the inside edge of the glass and eventually form a perfect circle.

This trick needs to be done with these cookies prior to baking though because they don’t change their shape while baking.

You can also do this with other baked cookies. The best time to do this with regular sugar and flour cookies is when they are hot out of the oven because they are more pliable and soft.

Why are My Cookies Too Crumbly?

Overbaking this applesauce cookie recipe can dry them out and since there are no eggs and flour like a typical cookie moisture is necessary to keep them together. Or it could be that too many add-ins were added to the recipe. There needs to be a good ratio between the dry ingredients and the applesauce to hold the cookies together.

If they are too dry they will not hold. I would not recommend more than 3/4 a cup of alternative add-ins.

Tasty Add-in Ideas

  • Diced or grated apple
  • Spices such as ginger, nutmeg, allspice, or pumpkin spice blend
  • Raisins
  • Chocolate chips
  • Shaved coconut
  • Nuts like chopped walnuts, pecans or almonds

storage and Freezing

These applesauce cookies are best kept in a tightly sealed container on the counter for 2 days or in the fridge for up to 4 days.

Or you can freeze them for up to 3 months. Because these cookies tend to be softer than a regular cookie I recommend freezing them on a baking sheet separately before transferring them to a container. This will prevent them from sticking together.
