I love chicken wings but they can be super expensive. The restaurants in my area charge about $1 a wing which is completely insane. We often go out for wing night when they are half-price price but after needing to buy a drink plus the tip etc. the price creeps up.
So I have started making wings at home and haven’t looked back.
Not a huge fan of spicy then these wings probably aren’t for you… but you can take out or reduce the cayenne pepper to take a little gas off the fire!
The spice level is a hard thing to describe because it is very personal but if it helps I can’t eat hot wings at a restaurant because they are too hot but I can eat these. They are very spicy but just right under the threshold of losing flavour and burning your nose hairs.
I stumbled upon a version of these wings at a New Year’s party this year. A friend made some baked wings and while she didn’t have an actual recipe she did tell me the gist of it. Throw spices in a bowl with some Frank’s, mix and bake. Not super helpful but it got the ball rolling.
It took me a few times to get the recipe right. I have made multiple batches of wings over the past few weeks but I feel I have now nailed it! Right in time for Super Bowl 2020 this weekend!
Ingredients you will need to make spicy chicken wings
- 3 lbs chicken wings
- 1 tbsp cayenne pepper
- 1 tbsp garlic powder
- 2 tsp salt
- 1 tsp black pepper
- 1/2 cup Frank’s Buffalo Wing Sauce
Tips for making perfect oven-baked chicken wings
- Make sure the wings are completely thawed if using frozen wings
- Pat the wings down with a paper towel to dry them. This allows the spices and oil to coat them better
- Resist the urge to flip them over while baking. Let them bake on high for at least a half-hour before flipping them over for another 15-30 minutes
- Do not overcrowd them on the baking sheet. Ensure that each wing has its own space to bake evenly. If wings are touching or stacked then the covered area will be unable to get crispy.
- Do not reheat in the microwave. Place back in the oven on high for 10 or 15 minutes to crisp them up again if they have been in the fridge.
How to make spicy roasted chicken wings
Pat 3 lbs of completely thawed chicken wings down with a paper towel to dry and then place them in a large bowl.
Add 2 tbsp of olive oil, 1 tbsp cayenne pepper, 1 tbsp garlic powder, 2 tsp salt, 1 tsp black pepper and 1/2 cup Frank’s Buffalo Wing Sauce.
Mix the wings well until all of the wings are evenly coated.
Preheat the oven to 400°F and place the chicken wings on a non-stick baking sheet allowing some space between each wing.
Bake for 30 minutes and then flip each wing and bake for another 15-30 minutes or until desired crispness. Remove from oven and serve immediately.
To serve I like to have some veggies on the side just like you would get in restaurants and good dip. The veggies and dip help to take away some of the heat so I can recuperate before biting into the next spicy chicken wing.
