Mexican Lime Crema

To be honest I don’t like sour cream at all.  I actually don’t like creamy sauces of any kind and always ask restaurants to leave off the creamy dressings.  But when I made fish tacos the other day and was going to take photos of them for the blog I knew there was something missing.   That little pop of contrasting colour.  What was missing? Sour cream!

I actually got a little panicked thinking about adding an ingredient I myself would never eat.  I only share recipes for foods I really like and eat.  Then I had a flashback..  To the one day a few weeks ago that I was at a Mexican Restaurant and my taco came with crema on it.  Initially I was horrified of course.  But I bit in, held my breath and… loved it.  What?  How can this be.

See I am a huge citrus fan and because the sour cream had lime juice added to it it was much thinner and had a great tang to it.  Limes are always in my fridge … a Corona fan true and true.  So whipping up this Mexican Lime Crema was a snap and done in under a minute.  I used much more lime than traditional crema calls for but I think this is why I like this sauce so much.

Crema has so many uses and can be used pretty much like sour cream.  Did several searches online and came up with some ideas on how others use this tangy topping.

What is Mexican Crema Used For?

Besides Tacos Mexican Crema can be used as a topping to add flavour and texture to many of your favourite foods.  Here are some great ways to use crema:

  • Add a dollop to soups or chili
  • As a veggie dip
  • Dip for fresh strawberries
  • Drizzle over rice
  • Use for breading fish sticks.  Dredge fish sticks in crema, roll in breadcrumbs and bake like you would normally bake fish sticks
  • Brush over corn on the cob instead of butter
  • On baked potatoes

Or use it any way you would normally use sour cream.

It’s always good to try new things or switch out our favourite toppings from time to time to keep meals fresh and exciting.  Plus as a mom with kids we sometimes need to take our own advice and give new things a try.

You never know until you try!  So glad I did!
