This was hands down my favourite drink the entire time I was in Sicily. I find it more refreshing than an Aperol spritz, though that might just be me talking. It’s a great cocktail to serve with something to nibble on, and my Calamari Fritti is one of my favourite appetizers to pair with it.

One thing to know before you make a full pitcher of this cocktail recipe: this drink is stronger than Aperol, and it sneaks up on you. I found that out the hard way in Giardini Naxos, two goblets in at the beach, and I never did make it to dinner that night. If citrus cocktails are your thing, this one and my Meyer Lemon Margarita are both worth keeping in your back pocket for summer entertaining, just maybe pace yourself better than I did.

Ingredients for a limoncello spritz on a table.

Star Ingredients

  • Limoncello – A sweet, syrupy lemon liquor that originates in Southern Italy.
  • Prosecco – An Italian sparkling wine typically produced in Northern Italy from Glera grapes and has notes of green apple, melon and pear. If you don’t have prosecco, it can easily be swapped with your favourite sparkling wine or champagne.
  • Club Soda – Simple, plain fizzy water. You can also use lemon-lime flavoured carbonated water if you like, but I would avoid Fuze, 7-Up, or the like because it is too sweet.

Keep it Cold

Limoncello isn’t something I pull out often, so to keep the flavor fresh, I freeze it. Because of the high sugar and alcohol content, it won’t freeze and tastes best when served cold in a chilled glass in a cocktail or as a digestif after a meal.

3-2-1 Limoncello Spritz method

Start by filling a large wine glass with ice. If you have time to chill the glass beforehand, even better. Then follow this simple formula:

  • 3 parts Limoncello
  • 2parts Prosecco
  • 1 part Club Soda

The amount of each you use will depend on the size of your glass, but I find 1 oz per part is enough for one large glass filled with ice. When done, give it a swirl and top with some lemon slices and fresh mint.

If you like your cocktails a little lighter and less boozy, add more soda water or cut back on the limoncello by one part. You can adjust as you wish, but the traditional Limoncello Spritz recipe is made with a 3-2-1 ratio.

Can I make A Pitcher?

Sure can! Follow the same Limoncello Spritz formula but use cups instead.
