– red wine like Cabernet Sauvingnon or Shiraz – water –  ruby red grapefruit – brown sugar – cinnamon stick – cardamom pods lightly crushed – freshly ground nutmeg – Cointreau or other orange flavoured liqueur

1. In a large saucepan add wine, water, Cointreau, brown sugar, cinnamon stick, grapefruit and nutmeg

2. Heat on medium-high heat just until it reaches a simmer- watch carefully. Do not bring to a boil

3. Turn down to lowest temperature and lightly simmer for 1/2 hour

4. Strain liquid into a large measuring cup to remove seeds.
