Snickerdoodle Dessert Hummus

Imagine a healthy snack that tastes like a cookie but is made with … wait for it beans!  Yup, you heard me! Snickerdoodle Dessert Hummus –  a sweet twist on traditional hummus using chickpeas but with some cinnamon and sweetness for a deliciously sweet and healthy snack.  Perfect for dipping cut up apples or a few pretzel sticks for a quick healthy snack. Even better… it is also vegan and gluten-free!

A great way to satisfy any sweet tooth without the need to actually dive face-first into a cookie jar.  Energy Bites like these Coconut Vanilla Energy Balls are also a great sweet treat saviour.

Snickerdoodle Hummus

Hummus has long been touted as a protein-packed on-the-go snack.  But being healthy doesn’t mean hummus need only be filled with garlic, jalapenos or pine nuts to be a great tasting healthy snack.   Snickerdoodle Hummus is a tasty blend of garbanzo beans, otherwise known as chickpeas, almond butter, maple syrup, cinnamon and vanilla extract.  Just throw all the ingredients in a food processor or hardcore blenders like a Vitamix or Blendtec and 60 seconds later you are ready to snack!

Wondering what exactly is a Snickerdoodle anyway?

Some people like to say that a Snickerdoodle Cookie is like a sugar cookie but I don’t think so at all.  Sugar cookies typically are a firm cookie that is served plain or decorated with sprinkles or icing. Snickerdoodles are somewhat similar but they usually have a little chewier texture and use cream of tarter for a bit of a tangy zip.

I didn’t use cream of tartar in this recipe because beyond adding a little zip to the flavour of the cookie cream of tarter is also used to stabilize eggs and add a little fluffiness to baked goods.  Given that we aren’t baking I used a little extra salt to add a little flavour bump for your taste buds instead.

So you may be wondering…

What is Dessert Hummus?  Is This Really A Thing?

You bet it is!  And dessert hummus does just stop at Snickerdoodle Hummus.  Oh no… you can get dessert hummus in almost every cake and cookie form imaginable to man.

Let’s start first by explaining why dessert hummus even is possible.  Chickpeas, otherwise known as garbanzo beans, have a mild nutty flavour that goes well with both savoury and sweet ingredients. Traditional hummus usually swings to the savoury side with garlic, jalapeno peppers, red pepper or pine nuts to add some extra flavour.  But this mild nutty flavour also goes well with flavours such as chocolate, nuts, nut butter, cinnamon, pumpkin etc.

So instead of adding a savoury flavour it is very easy to turn a traditional hummus recipe into a dessert recipe simply by combining these sweet dessert and cookie flavours.

Is Dessert Hummus Healthy?

Hummus, in general, is considered a healthy snack when paired with veggies for dipping or used as a sandwich spread.  Garbanzo beans are packed with protein and fibre making them a filling and satisfying snack. Because you fill more satisfied after eating a high protein and fibre snack like hummus you are less likely to go searching for another snack an hour later which lends itself to healthy balanced eating.  One serving of hummus is typically a ¼ cup… most people say 2 tbsp is a serving but let’s be real a ¼ cup is more likely.

So based on a ¼ cup of hummus you would typically garner 4 grams of fibre of 3 grams of protein.  Dessert hummus still has this combo of fibre and protein but there will be additional calories added for the sweet things you add to it like maple syrup and nut butter.  Still sugar but way way less than you would consume if you actually dove into the cookie jar or cut yourself a slice of pumpkin pie.

So I would say that if you are looking for a sweet treat dessert hummus is an excellent choice!

What Are The Best Things to Dip into Dessert Hummus?

  • Apple Slices
  • Cinnamon Pita Chips – you can find gluten-free versions or make some
  • Pretzel sticks
  • A spoon – just go at it!
  • Digestive Cookies (not the healthiest option but delicious)
  • Bananas (try them frozen)

Hummus takes literally 5 minutes to make and minimal mess making it the perfect healthy snack or healthy dessert!  Just put the ingredients in a food processor or supercharged blender and press go and then 60 seconds later your snack is ready!  Hummus of any kind is also really portable. Just put in small containers like those little salad dressing containers and pack you dipping foods.  Perfect for meal prepping for the week or a quick after school snack!
